Chinqueka’s Awesome Staff
There is something very special about the friendship between Chinqueka’s girls and their counselors. Over the course of just a few weeks, the staff have a way of becoming instant big-sisters to the girls. And past parents agree that the staff are one of the main reasons they keep sending their girls back to Camp. Each year, we are pleased to have a very high percentage of our staff return for the summer. For those that can’t make it back, we search all winter long to find suitable replacements – women that are strong, fun, caring, silly, safe, responsible and good role models. These are women who are able to control a cabin full of 13-year old girls and yet still nurture a young 7-year old who misses her Grandmother. Women who are brave enough to hide under a dark cabin for a Counselor Hunt but sensitive enough to cry on the last day of camp, as she’ll miss her new-found friends. These are women that you would be proud if your daughter some day grew up to be like. All our staff are trained to be hyper-aware of the safety and well being of all campers and they value the fact that you, as parents, are entrusting them with your most prized possession.
Our staff is an international one – coming from as close as CT and the Tri-State area to as far away as Australia and New Zealand. We take staff recruiting very seriously and background checks are performed on all staff before they start. One of our directors interviews and hires all the staff – so we are sure that they meet the Chinqueka standards.
All of our staff members are activity specialists. In the areas like Archery and many of the Waterfront activities, we require that all staff members be certified. For example, all waterfront staff are American Red Cross Lifeguard certified. We have no general counselors, except for our Counselor-in-Training (C.I.T.), Counselor-Aide (C.A.) and Jr. Counselor programs. Those programs are for former campers (age 16+) that are not old enough to be a counselor but too old to be a camper.
The staff to camper ratio varies from 1:4 to 1:5, depending on the age of the campers. We have an amazing staff return rate, well over 50%. All staff are required to attend a 9-day pre-camp training program.
